I’m going to leave procrastination for a bit, and address a different topic:
Fear vs. Anxiety.
What exactly is the difference between them?
Fear and anxiety share the same uncomfortable feelings of dread and unease. Your breathing might be more shallow, your stomach might feel queasy, you may feel dizzy. However, there is a difference between the two.
With fear, you know the source of the threat. It could be seeing your child run carelessly across the street, feeling the earth move during an earthquake, or having a deadline you know you can’t meet. Fear is an evolutionary survival mechanism that helps us to recognize danger. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to protect ourselves.
With anxiety, however, the source is not so clear. You may have free floating anxious sensations that don’t have a clear cause. You might be anxious about losing control, or something bad happening. You may be waking up every morning feeling anxious, recognizing how irrational it seems, but unable to control it.
And why is it important to know the difference? With fear, you can identify the threat and focus on how to remove it. With anxiety, it’s more about calming your overall nervous system. It’s about learning new ways to think and perceive that keep you at ease.
And it’s anxiety that most people complain about. And this is what I’ll be addressing in my next blog posts. So stay tuned…
