In the last post I talked about how safe it can feel to procrastinate in order to avoid confrontation.
But what about procrastinating for the thrill of it? What about feeling the excitement of being close to disaster, then avoiding it at the last minute?
Does this motivate you to procrastinate? Instead of racing cars, rock climbing or gambling, you put things off to the last minute. And this time it’s serious, your life or work could be in jeopardy. Some examples are:
*How late can you finish projects before your boss will fire you?
*How much can you anger your spouse before he/she decides to leave you?
*How long can you wait to fix your car before it breaks down on the freeway?
As you find that fine edge, you get that rush of adrenaline, and then swoop in to rescue yourself, your job, and your marriage. The sweet victory of that can give you another rush of triumph and elation, well worth any negative consequences of your procrastination.
I encourage you to contemplate what you are willing to risk in order to get that adrenaline rush. Maybe you’ll decide it’s not worth it and find healthier ways to bring excitement into your life. Or maybe not…..but at least you’ll know what you are doing and why.
Until next time……
