New Year’s Resolutions – Revisited

How are your New Year’s resolutions going?  Are they manifesting or not?  It can be really easy to just let them go as we delve into the new year.  Is this happening for you?

It might be time to revisit your resolutions.

But you may wonder, “what’s the point if I’ll just drop them again?”

That’s a very good question.  There is no point if you don’t have a new strategy.  And I have one for you. One that I think holds promise.

Scientific American published an article titled  “I Don’t” Beats “I Can’t” for Self-Control, by Tori Rodriguez.   In August 2012, four studies showed that how we talk to ourselves matter.  Say one of your resolutions was to not eat junk food.  If you say to yourself, “I can’t eat junk food,” you would likely at some point start eating junk food.

However, if you say, “I don’t eat junk food,” you will more likely succeed.

Why?  Because if you say I don’t, you are speaking from a place of empowerment, from a place of choice.  If you say I can’t, you are saying that you are deprived and are speaking from a victim position.

Try each statement and see how they each feel.  Saying “I don’t” feels very different to me than
“I can’t.”

Now take your New Year’s resolutions, and rephrase them.  See if the new wording makes a difference for you and let me know what you think!
