Rules are Meant to Be Broken

Your procrastination might not be about fear of success, but rather about the fear of being controlled.

Does this sound like you?

When given a deadline, do you extend it so that you determine when it’s done? Do you postpone your cleaning because you had to clean weekly growing up?  Do you do a favor only when you are ready to, not when you are asked?

These actions are all about needing control and power.  Especially if you tell yourself you shouldn’t have to do something, or you shouldn’t have to do it their way.

This type of procrastination is an attempt to gain power in relation to someone else.  If you are late finishing a task, the other person seems less powerful because they couldn’t make you do it on time.  You might be smart enough to not push so far that you’d lose a job, but you do it far enough to say, “you don’t control me, I do things on my own terms.”

When you find yourself procrastinating, see if it’s about the fear of being controlled. Then ask yourself if this is a realistic fear or not, and see if there is another way to react.  You might decide to procrastinate, but you might also discover a preferable way to respond.
