When Meditation is Hard (Part One)

Some people have a really hard time meditating. Are you one of them? Well, you certainly aren’t alone.

Here are three tips you can try to ease your meditation experience:

1) Do you have a hard time focusing on your breath? Try listening to the sounds around you. You can also notice the feeling of your body sitting on a cushion, or your hands resting in your lap. The point of the exercise is to focus your attention on something, and it doesn’t have to be your breath.

2) Are you uncomfortable keeping your eyes closed? Use your vision to focus on something. It could be a candle flame, a picture, or an object. Again, meditation is about strengthening your ability to focus. And you can do that with your eyes open as well as closed.

3) Having trouble sitting still? Walking meditation is just as valuable. Start walking slowly, and be aware of every step you take. You can also focus on the sights and sounds around you. Meditation is about being present with what is instead of getting lost in thoughts and feelings. Some people have an easier time with this in a walking meditation than a sitting one.

Try these ideas out and see if they help you. My next post will include three more tips.
